Launching Primary Writing

Catgeories : Primary

We’re really pleased to launch Primary Writing as part of the United Curriculum.

As with all of our subjects, the Primary Writing curriculum is well-sequenced and is designed to support and empower teachers to adapt and deliver it effectively for their pupils. Some of the key features of the curriculum are below.

If have any questions or would like a free trial of the resources, please get in touch – we’re happy to arrange something bespoke to fit your school’s needs.

The Primary Writing curriculum is carefully sequenced.

Key learning in the national curriculum is meticulously mapped across units, year groups and key stages, so you can be confident that pupils are taught new knowledge in small steps, and are revisiting them regularly.

New knowledge is explicitly taught.

Functional grammar is explicitly taught and practised within the context of each writing unit. Discrete grammar lessons make it harder for pupils to connect their learning to other things and make the learning relevant – so we make sure that it’s always in context and embedded.

Quality texts by diverse authors are at the heart of the curriculum.

It’s vital for pupils to see high quality, published texts in their writing curriculum; the texts in the United Curriculum are used as either models or stimuli for pupils’ writing. There are a range of texts in each unit, each one carefully selected for its literary merit and to ensure that pupils read diverse stories written by diverse authors. But schools are not limited to these texts – there is a range of other suggested texts for each unit and schools are encouraged to select texts that are right for their contexts.

The curriculum is built on the conviction that every child has something worthwhile to write about.

The curriculum acknowledges and values pupils’ own diverse funds of knowledge, and encourages pupils to write about what they know. The curriculum develops – in an age-appropriate way – pupils’ autonomy and independence, and they are given ample opportunities to write for authentic purposes and audiences.

Subject Knowledge Packs support all staff.

Subject knowledge packs are included for each year group. These describe the writing objectives for each year group, providing examples for teachers and detail about exactly what pupils need to understand and demonstrate in their writing in order to meet age-related expectations.
